    BABIES <32 WEEKS BREASTFEEDING

    • NO BOTTLES BEFORE 32 WEEKS
    • First PO feeding experiences should be at the breast
    • May dip pacifer in EBM
    • Offer Pacifier during NG feeding
    • Consult Lactation Team to support Mom

    BABIES BW 32-35 WEEKS BREASTFEEDING

    • If Mom CAN be present for 3 OR MORE feedings per day = Breastfeed when she is present and NG when she is not
    • If Mom CAN NOT be present for frequent breastfeeding, = the medical team needs to negotiate PO feeding plan with Mom
    • CONSULT LACTATION TEAM: To evaluate introduction of supplemental nursing system as a way to give fortified EBM without introducing a bottle

    BREASTFEEDING BABIES AT DISCHARGE

    • Mom should Room-in for 12-24 HOURS
    •  If mom is available for FOUR OR MORE FEEDINGS A DAY, continue to NG while Mom is not here
    • HOWEVER, if 100% PO feeding is all that is left for the baby to be   discharged, have MDs discuss/negotiate PO feeding plan w Mom
