Focused Ultrasound Trial

We’re pleased to announce the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved focused ultrasound to treat patients diagnosed with essential tremor (ET) who have not responded to medication. This approval comes after a large clinical trial led by UVA. For more details, read our press release.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have ET. What treatments are available to me now?

We’re working on the logistics of how we will make focused ultrasound treatment available for ET patients outside of clinical trials. We don’t yet know when we’ll begin performing the procedure or how much it will cost. In the meantime, our doctors will continue to see patients and advise them on the best treatment options available for their conditions. To schedule a consultation for focused ultrasound, contact Karen Osteen at ksh5m@virginia.edu.

Will there be additional clinical trials using focused ultrasound for ET at UVA?

There are currently no clinical trials using focused ultrasound for ET at UVA, but there may be in the future.

I have Parkinson’s disease (PD). How can I be considered for a UVA clinical trial involving focused ultrasound?

Email fusbrain@virginia.edu if you experience severe dyskinesia symptoms and would like to know if you qualify for our current PD trial.
