Nicole Guinn, MD
Duke University
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology
Fellowship: Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Duke University Medical Center, 2012
Residency: Internship, Internal Medicine, Saint Luke's Roosevelt Hospital (New York), 2008
Anesthesiology, Duke University Medical Center, 2011
Education: MD, New York University Mount Sinai School of Medicine, 2007

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Dr. Guinn attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she graduated with AOA honors. After completing her anesthesiology residency and fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia at Duke University Medical Center, she stayed on as faculty and is now an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, practicing in both cardiac and neuro-anesthesia. Dr. Guinn has served as the Medical Director of the Center for Blood Conservation at Duke University Medical Center since 2013, working with patients who decline transfusion to receive safe care and improved outcomes.
Since 2015, she has also led the development of an institutional Preoperative Anemia Clinic, using her knowledge in the area of blood conservation to help diagnose and treat anemia in operative patients at risk for transfusion. She is known nationally for her expertise in management of patients “When Blood is Not an Option” and for preoperative optimization of anemia in surgical patients, having lectured and published widely on these topics. She is currently serving as the Vice-Chair of the ASA Committee on Patient Blood Management. Dr. Guinn also serves as a physician volunteer with the American Board of Anesthesiology as an APPLIED Examiner, a question writer, and an OSCE Committee member.

Objectives:
1. Review prevalence of anemia in pre-surgical patients and the associated morbidity and mortality
2. Discuss data from the literature and institutional experience with how treating anemia can affect outcomes
3. Describe how to determine etiology of anemia and appropriate management, including resources needed to start a preoperative anemia program
