Low-grade inflammation, an obesity-associated condition involving increased levels of circulating proinflammatory cytokines, plays a role in cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The focus of this presentation is on novel highly cytokine-sensitive genes identified by microarray and their effects on insulin-producing beta-cells in type 2 diabetes. Relevant links to cardiovascular disease will also be discussed.
