Inpatient Services
Newborns delivered at UVA are cared for in the Newborn Nursery on the 8th floor of the University Hospital, adjacent to Labor and Delivery. The nursery is staffed by pediatricians and nurses with specialized training in the care of newborns. We offer:
- Breast feeding support
- Education in care of newborns
- Infant CPR classes

Infants born prematurely or with other potentially life-threatening conditions are cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The unit is staffed by neonatologists (physicians with training in the care of critically ill and low birth weight newborns), nurse practitioners, nurses, and therapists with specialized training. We offer:
- Air and ground transport from community hospitals
- Cardiac and respiratory support (ECMO)
- High-frequency oscillation (artificial ventilation to control breathing)
- Cardiac surgery, including heart transplant

More than 2,700 children ages 0-21 receive general and specialty pediatric/surgical care in our inpatient units each year. Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists provide family-centered care to children and families from across the country.

Children ages 0-21 with more critical conditions are cared for in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The unit is staffed by a team of pediatricians, nurses and other healthcare professionals with specialized training in the care of critically ill children. We offer:
- intensive monitoring for children with serious medical or surgical conditions
- state-of-the-art therapies such as high frquency ventiliation, ECMO, CVVHD (kidney support), and inhaled nitric oxide

The Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center (KCRC) serves children of all ages with special needs. Its accredited Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient and Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programs address a child's medical and emotional needs with an emphasis on reinforcing strengths and coping skills. Services include:
- rehabilitation after injury or surgery
- management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis
- therapies for problems with walking, talking, learning, eating, or behavior
