UVa Health System, Department of Surgery seeks adults with severe mitral valve leakage who are being scheduled for open heart surgery for a research study
The purpose of the study is to see if it is of greater benefit to repair or replace the valve to improve the valve function. Currently both procedures are done for patients with a severe leaking valve but it has not been determined which procedure is of greater benefit. All patients in the study will have open heart surgery and tests to look at the heart function. Participants in the study will be followed for 2 years after surgery (including visits to UVA at 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery).
Participants may receive up to $225 with completion of all required study visits. Tests and clinic visits which would not be required for routine care are provided at no cost. Participants are responsible for all costs associated with their heart surgery and hospital stay.
