The UVa Health System, Department of Radiology Division of Breast Imaging seeks women age 18 and older to participate in a research study. The purpose of this study is to identify genes that control the density or whiteness of the breast tissue on mammography. We know that women that have very dense tissue on mammography are at higher risk for developing breast cancer than women that have less tissue on mammography. Finding the genes that control breast density may help us better know which patients are at risk for developing breast cancer and target preventive therapies to reduce breast cancer risk.
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to:
Fill out a 5-10 minute questionnaire
Let us obtain your height and weight.
Swish Scope mouthwash in your mouth for 60 seconds and discard in a collection tube. You should not eat, drink, or chew gum for at least one hour before the mouthwash collection.
Let us measure the density of the breast tissue on your mammogram
Let us access your medical records in the future to see how well the genes that we identify and the breast density measurement predict breast cancer risk.
Some women will not be able to participate because they do not meet study criteria. No compensation is provided for this study.
If you are interested in participating in the study, Call 434-982-1036
