Radiology
UVA faculty are pioneers in the development of minimally invasive radiological treatments for arterial disease (hardening of the arteries) and venous disease, which occurs when veins become blocked. UVA also has one of the most advanced cardiac imaging research programs in the United States.
UVA offers many innovative treatments and technologies, including:
- Interventional Radiology
- UVA is one of the first two hospitals in the world to install the Artis ZeegoTM, a new imaging system that produces more accurate and complete images sooner to help doctors better plan and perform treatments. For instance, the machine can see the entire liver in a single image, improving treatment for liver tumors by helping doctors determine whether chemotherapy is being delivered to the right location.
- The machine's robotic arm allows it to move around patients to provide images from different angles instead of having to move the patient, reducing strain on patients.
- Dual Source CT
-
Provides higher-quality images - especially of the heart - faster than other CT scanners. The high-quality images can help rule out heart disease in low- to medium-risk patients with chest pain that come to UVA's Chest Pain Center.
-
Provide clear images regardless of how fast a patient's heart is beating. Previously, patients with high heart rates required medication to slow down their hearts to allow them to undergo a CT scan.
-
- 3T MRI
- Twice as strong as the typical MRI scanner now in use, helping produce higher-quality, more detailed images. The 3T MRI is better able to identify small structures that couldn't previously be imaged, such as cranial nerves.
- The new MRI also helps doctors more safely plan brain surgeries.by locating brain tumors while also identifying vital areas of the brain that control speech and motor function, allowing surgeons to pinpoint diseased areas of the brain while sparing healthy areas.
- Open MRI, all the capabilities of a traditional MRI but has an open platform for a less restrictive layout.
The UVA Health System offers a full range of services, special expertise in interventional radiology including use of stents to treat vascular and pulmonary conditions.
