Non-Traumatic Emergencies
Level One Trauma Center
The Emergency Department at UVa is home to a level one trauma center that treats all types of adult and pediatric emergencies. The 40-bed department is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and nurses 24-hours-a-day.
Blue Ridge Poison Control (BRPC)
Providing general poison information and poison management advice to over 3 million residents in 62 counties and 48 hospitals of central and western Virginia and Virginia Beach. BRPC is staffed by nurse specialists, medical toxicologists and toxicology fellows. All calls are free and confidential.
Stroke Center
Multi-disciplinary program for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of acute stroke including a dedicated 10-bed stroke unit
Chest Pain Center
The 5-bed unit is located in the Emergency Department and focused on the care of patients presenting with cardiovascular emergencies. Initial management, stabilization and observation of patients at low to intermediate risk of acute coronary syndromes are served. Staffed by Emergency Medicine board-certified physicians and specialized nurses with training in emergency cardiovascular care.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Comprehensive pediatric emergency care for children with problems ranging from minor and multiple traumas to the management of acute medical problems. The Emergency Department has a separate emergency area and waiting room for children and their families. Staffed by trained pediatric emergency physicians, it is the only dedicated facility of its type in central Virginia, serving patients throughout the Commonwealth.
SANE - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners
Provide care and evidence collection to victims and families of sexual assault and abuse. Information on how to call law enforcement, how evidence is collected and what medical treatments are available is given. If the assault has occurred within 72 hours and a report is filed, the examinations authorized by a law enforcement officer or the Commonwealth Attorney are paid for by funds administered by the Virginia Supreme Court.
