Clinical Services

Neuro Oncology Center
Multidisciplinary expertise in the clinical management of patients with brain and spine tumors.  A new diagnostic technology, molecular cytogenetics, helps determine which brain tumors will best respond to chemotherapy. Uva specialists have access to technologies available in few other places including a gamma knife and the first tomotherapy unit in the Mid-Atlantic.

Neuro Oncology Clinical Trials
UVa brings the best and most advanced medical care to those suffering from neurological cancers, including options to enroll in clinical trials.

Stroke Center
Multi-disciplinary program for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of acute stroke.  Inpatients are treated in a dedicated 10-bed stroke unit or the 12-bed neuro-intensive care unit. 

Critical Care Medicine
Provided in the Nerancy Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, several experimental protocols are available to augment standard neuro-critical care.

Epilepsy
The F.E. Dreifuss Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is a self-contained Epilepsy Clinic with a six-bed monitoring unit. Patients are admitted for video-EEG monitoring to determine if spells are seizures, characterize the seizure type for best therapy, localize seizure onset for pre-surgical evaluation, place and monitor intracranial electrodes and adjust drug therapy. Clinical trials are available.

Movement Disorders
Comprehensive therapies available for all movement disorders. UVa is designated as a regional information and referral center by the American Parkinson's Research Association. In conjunction with the department of neurosurgery, patients with Parkinson's have access to deep brain stimulation therapies. Clinic patients participate in a variety of sponsored clinical trials.

Memory Disorders
Comprehensive diagnosis and care through an interdisciplinary team of neurologists, neuro-psychologists, neuro-radiologists and psychiatrists. A wide variety of clinical trials available.

Neuromuscular Disease Program
Program includes neuromuscular clinics, electrodiagnostic/ electromyographic evaluations, and clinical trials.  Patients with peripheral nerve damage, neuromuscular junction disorders, muscle diseases, and motor neuron diseases are seen in the EMG Laboratory. Pediatric patients are treated and receive rehabilitation services through the Kluge Rehabilitation Center.

Multiple Sclerosis Program
Comprehensive consultative treatment, support and education services are offered through an interdisciplinary team of Neurologists, and neuro-psychologists. The program is actively involved in a variety of clinical trials.

Cerebrovascular Surgery and Stroke
Treatments provided for cerebral injuries including clotting disorders, brain hemorrhage, aneurysms and blood vessel malformations.

Comprehensive Spine
Provides comprehensive services for treating disorders of the spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves for both adults and children. Treatments are available for spinal cord and spinal column tumors, vascular malformations of the spine, spinal reconstruction following trauma or previous surgery, and artificial spinal disc replacement.

Craniofacial Surgery
Treatment provided for craniofacial disorders, including congenital issues.

Functional Neurosurgery
Treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy, spasticity, chronic pain and essential tremors.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery
Advanced technology used for the noninvasive treatment of a variety of benign and metastatic growths, as well as for epilepsy and movement disorders.

Neuroendocrine
Providing medical and surgical treatment to patients with pituitary, hypothalamic and related problems.

Neuro-Oncology
Full spectrum of treatment of benign and malignant brain tumors, including state-of-the-art gamma knife treatment.

Pediatric Neurosurgery
Comprehensive treatment of pediatric patients requiring neurosurgical care, including spinal injury, pediatric scoliosis, epilepsy, tumors, hydrocephalus and craniofacial disorders.
