UVA's Digestive Health Center has been named a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Digestive Research Center, one of only 16 in the country. Doctors at UVa have developed many innovative treatments and technologies, including:
- Groundbreakding new treament of pancreatic disease using advanced endoscopic ultrasound technology, innovative surgical and nutrition approaches.
- Advanced minimally invasive treatment of bile duct conditions employing stenting, imaging, and endoscopic treatments available at only a few centers in the country
- A UVa physician co-chairs the first study on living liver donors in the world.
- Publishing the largest study in the world on outcomes for the treatment of benign pancreatic pseudocysts--a side effect of pancreatic disease.
- UVA performed the region's first auxiliary liver transplant in a pediatric patient, one of only a handful of such surgeries performed in the world.
