UVa Exercise and Sports Laboratory seeks healthy men and women, between 18-35 years old, to volunteer for participation in a research study examining the affects of an ice treatment on blood flow in the lower leg muscles

The purpose of the study is to see how blood flow and temperature of the calf muscle changes when ice is applied to the calf. The study involves placing an IV in the arm to inject microbubbles that measure blood flow and placing a thermometer into the calf muscle using a needle to record temperature changes. The area will be numbed first with lidocaine. There will be 4 study visits. The first 2 visits are screening visits to see if you are eligible to participate. They are each about 30 minutes. The first screening visit is a general health exam and the second visit is at the GCRC for a standard blood test (less than 2 teaspoons), an ECG, and pregnancy test for female participants. The 3rd visit will last about 3 hours in the GCRC and consist of either receiving an ice treatment or no treatment. Either way, the IV will be placed in the arm and the thermometer placed in the calf. On the 4th visit, you will receive the opposite treatment on the 3rd visit. Again it will last about 3 hours in the GCRC. All study related tests (blood test, ECG, pregnancy test, and microbubbles) will be provided free of charge. Compensation for completing the study is $100.
