UVa Health System, Department of Medicine, Endocrinology seeks Healthy Men and Women, ages 18-35 for research study.
The purpose of the study is to find out how insulin affects the blood flow and the blood vessels in the arm, to see if exercising the forearm will have the same effect as insulin on the blood vessels and blood flow and to see if blocking the action of insulin will also block the effects on the blood vessels and blood flow.
Study involves two outpatient visits, the first is the screening visit lasting 1 hour-involves history and physical and a blood draw for screening labs. The second visit lasts approximately 2 hours-involves body composition measurements and baseline ultrasound imaging of your forearm.
There is one inpatient visit lasting approximately 24 hours. You will check in the evening before around 5PM, have dinner and then fast overnight. We will conduct the study the next morning. This involves the placement of 3-4 IV lines for approximately 4-6 hours. We will infuse insulin, glucose, lipids and ultrasound contrast agent through these lines. We will also conduct our blood sampling through these lines. You will be discharged in the afternoon after a meal.
Compensation for study completion is $300.00
