This service provides offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services for adults with a wide variety of communication and swallowing disorders.

 

Voice Clinic

UVa is fortunate to have a physician whose speciality is the care of voices, including professional singers. Dr. James Burns heads the Division of Laryngology and treats voice disturbances that may require speech and voice therapy, or surgery, and often both. Dr. Burns is an expert in surgery on the larynx and vocal chords.

 

The division provides full range of diagnostic and treatment services, including a state of the art Voice Lab with sophisticated, computerized voice analysis and video equipment. Diagnostic testing services include auditory assessment of the disordered voice, visual assessment of the larynx, rigid and flexible endoscopic examination of the larynx, stroboscopic assessment and recording of the vibratory patterns of the vocal folds, aerodynamic measures of the phonatory functions of the larynx, and acoustic measurements of the voice signal.

 

Speech Pathology

 

State of the art equipment is used by our team of speech language pathologists to tailor voice therapy plans for each patient according to their own abilities and limitations. Services include Speech Retraining, Voice Clinic and Head and Neck Cancer Therapy.
