The Unversity of Virginia provides a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, and offers special expertise in the following areas:

UVa is consistently ranked as one of the top centers for endocrinology and diabetes care in the country by U.S. News & World Report. UVa's Diabetes and Hormone Center of Excellence is one of the few National Institutes of Health designated Diabetes Centers, a designation awarded diabetes research programs. UVa is also home to innovative research and treatment, including:
- UVa is one of a small number of centers in the U.S. and the only center in Virginia to perform islet cell transplants, which help diabetics live without insulin shots.
- Researchers at UVa have identified an inflammation-inducing enzyme in blood vessels that can cause plaque to buildup and hardening of the arteries in people with elevated glucose levels.
- Researchers are investigating early kidney disease markers and make it more treatable at earlier stage.
- Researchers are investigating ways to reduce the occurrence of driving accidents related to low blood sugar.
- Researchers are investigating the relationship between weight gain or weight loss, and the timing of mealtime insulin
