UVA Health System Human Immune Therapy Center seeks both men and women who have had breast cancer surgery for a research study.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Kinesiotaping on breast cancer patients with lymphedema. Prior treatment for lymphedema will be allowed, however wearing compression sleeves during participation of this study will not be allowed.

Study Details:
Participants will have Kinesio Tape placed on their affected arm by the research nurse that should stay in place for five days. (Participants are expected to shower, bathe and exercise as usual while tape stays in place.)

Special measuring tapes will be provided to the participant so that they can self-measure each day and track on a log sheet.

Each participant will get two five-day cycles of taping to track results.

If tape is effective in reducing swelling after two cycles, patient may continue using it with supervision from the research nurse.

Kinesio Tape is made from 100% cotton and is latex free. It is light weight and undetectable under clothing. The tape is applied in a wavelike pattern that allows the skin to breath and exerts a constant, gentle tension on the skin that increases the movement of lymph fluid. Kinesio Tape has been used for many years for orthopedic and sports injuries, but little study has been done with lymphedema.

Compensation:
No compensation is provided for this study.
