Volunteer Programs for Adults

WELCOME! Volunteering is enriching and rewarding.

  • While previous hospital experience is not required, we are seeking volunteers who will provide excellent customer service, and bring compassion and enthusiasm to their role.
  • Most volunteers give one shift per week - a shift means a morning, afternoon or evening -- the time period is defined by your role.  Some dedicated volunteers are able to give more time - however we encourage new volunteers to start out with one shift and let their commitment grow.
  • Most programs have specific hours/days when volunteers are needed. The time commitment varies with the program but generally asks a volunteer to commit about 3 hours per week for 6 months - 1 year.
  • Volunteers who can't make a regular commitment are still needed as substitutes and for one-day events.
  • After applying to Volunteer Services, all accepted volunteers attend general orientation, which includes infection control and confidentiality training.  They also receive a free tuberculosis and immunization screening, and specific training for their assignment.
  • Volunteer Services checks references and will require a criminal history background check for volunteers aged 18 and over.
  • Volunteers automatically become members of the UVA Hospital Auxiliary, which provides special events, leads ongoing programs and donates funds to the Medical Center.
  • This entire start-up process can take up to one month.
  • More details can be found on Frequently Asked Questions
  • Benefits include free parking, free flu shot, Gift Shop discount, a newsletter,  special recognition during National Volunteer Week, semi-annual social gatherings and more.
