Junior Volunteer Program

The Junior Volunteer Program offers youth ages 14-17 an opportunity to volunteer in departments throughout the hospital.  Junior Volunteers provide thousands of hours of valuable service to patients, families, and staff, while gaining experience and self-confidence for themselves. This popular program is great way for teens to spend the summer!

The 2012 Junior Volunteer Program will run June 18th - August 10th.  The application process is underway.  The deadline for new Junior Volunteer Applications is Friday, March 9th at 5:00 PM.

We look forward every summer to the Junior Volunteers.  These Volunteers may serve patients and families in a variety of settings including, but not limited to: Flower Delivery, Mail Delivery, Malcolm W. Cole Child Care Center, Gift Shop, Patient Escort/Wayfinding and Administrative Support, as well as various inpatient units.  A complete list of volunteer opportunities for JVs is provided with the application materials.

  • The 8 Week - 2012 Junior Volunteer Program will run from June 18th  -  August 10, 2012.

  • Students who are selected to participate must visit Employee Health for compulsory Tuberculosis screens during designated times in the Spring.  In addition, documentation is required of 2 MMR vaccines and 2 varicella vaccines or date the teen contracted Chicken Pox.  A Tdap vaccine will be required if documentation of tetanus is more than 2 years old.
  • All selected Junior Volunteers, returning and new, must attend a Mandatory Orientation Monday, June 18th.  If you are not able to attend this mandatory meeting then we will be unable to offer you a position as a Junior Volunteer this summer.
  • We allow a maximum of 2 weeks (during the 8 week program) for vacation and summer camp The weeks do not have to be consecutive but Juniors do need to volunteer no less than 6  times in each of their shifts in order to be considered for the program.

In appreciation for their service, JVs who complete the summer program and their families will be invited to a PARTY on the last day of the program, Friday, August 10th. Certificates of achievement and awards for cumulative hours of service will be presented.

The Junior Volunteer Program is co-sponsored by the Department of Volunteer Services and the UVA Hospital Auxiliary. Each year, the Auxiliary offers the Pat and Frank Dawson Scholarship to a former Junior Volunteer who has been accepted into a post-high school health care training program.  Applications for the Dawson Scholarship are available through the Volunteer Office and are due on April 1st.
