Educational programs, Community Initiatives, meetings

Background:

The legal regulations of health related industries continues to expand, limiting commercial sponsorship of educational programs and meetings. Our chapter has been trying to find ways to keep our membership programs exciting, informative, and enjoyable. We, as a chapter, can not charge dues for chapter membership. This leaves us with no set way to raise money. When we have speakers for our programs, we offer a gift valued at $50 which comes from the $5 fee we charge for the quarterly meetings. We can also get the AV equipment free of charge. The meeting locations normally do not cost us anything, though their costs are absorbed by the meal fee. The meals generally run $35-$55/person, after the gratuity and taxes are added. There is limited space in Charlottesville to hold meetings for 25-45 attendees. They consist of a very few restaurants or locations at the hospitals. I think it becomes evident the difficulties the chapter leadership has been facing. We are trying to obtain grants for our programs. However, a lot of companies do not want to pay out $2-3000 for a program lasting 2 hours. It took 4 sponsors to hold our February program. At that rate, you run out of sponsors pretty fast. With this as background information, please give us your input on the following options. We want the answers that would keep you coming to the meetings, so please be honest as to what motivates you to attend our programs.

One of our chapter goals is to support efforts to reduce heart disease with community programs. Though we are not yet in a position to offer our own programs, we have been involved in participating in efforts of other organizations.
