Services

Speech-Language Pathologists perform a variety of services. The following are a few of the services offered at UVa Health System. Adult patients are seen at either the Medical Center or the clinics at Fontaine Research Park. Pediatric patients are seen at either the Medical Center (inpatients) or at Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center on Ivy Road.

Speech Retraining

Swallowing Retraining

Evaluation and therapy for patients who have lost communication skills as a result of neurologic disease, ventilator dependence, cancer or trauma. Evaluation and treatment of oral-motor dysfunction to improve clarity and precision of speech. Clinical assessment and therapy to restore swallowing function. Implementation of swallowing exercises, therapeutic techniques and compensatory strategies to enable safe and efficient oral intake. Caregiver training for aspiration precautions and individualized feeding protocol provided.

Language Rehabilitation

Cognitive-Linguistic Retraining

Diagnosis and treatment of patients with acquired aphasia including deficits in verbal expression, auditory, comprehension, reading comprehension and written language skills. Diagnosis and treatment of patients with acquired brain injuires or neurologic disease resulting in deficits in attention, concentration, problem-solving, memory and communication skills.
 

Modified Barium Swallow Study

 

Voice Therapy

An oral and pharyngeal swallowing study performed under fluoroscopy to assess a patient's ability to protect the airway when swallowing solids and liquids and to determine therapeutic techniques to improve or eliminate dysphagia. Evaluation and treatment of patients with organic and functional vocal cord and laryngeal disorders. Training for the use of artifical larynges and voice prostheses for laryngectomized patients.
