The Risk Management program is a key component of the University of Virginia Medical Center's Patient Safety and Performance/Quality Improvement programs. The functions of Risk Management within the Patient Safety & Risk Management Department include:

potential medical malpractice claims identification and reporting

medical malpractice claims management

insurance management and verification
-
lost/damaged patient property management
-
records management
Risk Management also assists staff and Resident physicians with legal inquiries, including those from outside attorneys, regarding Notices of Claim, Complaints, subpoenas, depositions and all procedures and processes involved in medical malpractice cases. These functions are completed with the assistance of the University General Counsel's office, the Division of Risk Management in Richmond, Virginia, the Office of the Attorney General of the Commonwealth and UVa's external medical malpractice Defense Counsel.
