Clinical Research

Learn more about UVA Clinical Trials
Clinical research in the PICU is an important way for physician investigators to discover new and better ways of caring for critically ill children. All clinical research at the University of Virginia is approved by the Human Investigations Committee of the Institutional Review Board.

Multiple clinical research projects are in progress in the PICU. Parents or guardians of children in the PICU may be asked for permission to allow the child to participate in a clinical study. These conversations are detailed, with time allotted to fully answer all questions about study participation.

Many studies are designed to include all children with a certain condition requiring care in pediatric intensive care units across the country. In these cases the studies have been approved by the IRB (Institutional Review Board) at each of those institutions as well as the University of Virginia.

Neither parental permission nor refusal to participate in clinical research studies will affect the care of the child in the PICU.
