Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Who We Are and What We Do
Welcome to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (referred to by most as the PACU). It is an area of a hospital designated for "recovering" from the immediate effects of anesthesia before either going home or on to another in-hospital destination.
The PACU is staffed by twenty registered nurses, and is open 24 hours a day. All of the nurses are seasoned clinicians with a wide range of clinical backgrounds and with expertise in areas such as critical care, plastic surgery, emergency, orthopedic and pediatric nursing. This wide range of knowledge and skill level comes as a great advantage for there is a wide range of clientele that pass through the doors of the PACU. On any given day as many as forty to fifty patients ranging in age from infancy to centenarian, spend a bit of time "recovering" from a variety of procedures ranging from something as simple as a CAT scan (a special radiological procedure) to something as complex as having brain surgery.
No matter how simple or how complex a procedure, the main focus during the recovery room period, simply put, is that all patients awaken safely and comfortably. It is our emphasis on growth and education in areas such as pain management and airway maintenance, which makes the University of Virginia PACU registered nurse, a caring partner in assuring that your safety is maintained and that reasonable comfort is achieved.
