How to Establish a New Volunteer Program

Volunteer Request Forms are reviewed and assessed on a monthly basis and priority is given to those that directly benefit and support our organizational goals.  If approved, the startup process to create a new program can take up to 90 days.  A position description and skills checklist will need to be developed and a volunteer partner identified.

To establish a new volunteer program in your area/unit a Request for Volunteer Program must be completed.  Be sure to think about what your goals and objectives are for involving volunteers.  Successful volunteer programs provide a meaningful experience for the volunteer and have a designated, committed site/area volunteer partner. Volunteers complement and supplement the work of paid staff but are not a substitute or a replacement for staff.

Review the ABCD Volunteer Task List - This list was developed in collaboration with the Medical Center’s Infection Control Committee and it indicates the type of activities appropriate for volunteers, according to their risk of exposure.  It may give you ideas as you develop your request.  This list is not exhaustive, so feel free to ask if you have a task in mind that is not identified on this list.

All volunteers complete an application, are interviewed, background checked, referenced checked, and attend a mandatory Safety & Service Orientation before they start volunteering.  This Orientation includes an overview of our organization, training in Diversity, Infection Control, Confidentiality & HIPAA, Fire and Safety, and volunteer rules and responsibilities.  Volunteers also visit Employee Health for a TB screening and immunization review, obtain a photo ID, and a uniform from Volunteer Services.
