What to expect...

ASoutherland & RN consultYour local physician or health clinic and your UVA specialist will work together to decide on the best treatment plan for you.  Your medical data, x-ray images and other important information will be sent directly to the specialist at UVA Health System who will review your information before your appointment.  An appointment will then be scheduled for you at your local medical center for your telemedicine consultation.  During your appointment you will talk to the physician using a TV screen, camera and broadband internet technology.  After the appointment, your healthcare provider will be faxed a report with follow-up information.

How can you benefit?

By using telemedicine, you can enjoy timely access to specialty health care without the burden and expenses of long distance travel.  Instead of having to make a lengthy trip to a medical center such as UVA, you can have a shorter journey to your local clinic for your UVA telemedicine appointment and receive world-class specialty medical care.

"Using Telemedicine services, I no longer have to travel to Charlottesville, stay in a hotel and miss time away from work and my family."
- Hepatology Patient

We know that saving travel time, decreasing your number of days away from work, and reducing transportation costs will allow for you to receive care more easily.  Telemedicine does this while giving you the same quality of care.

Payment and Insurance

Many insurers including Medicare and Virginia Medicaid cover the cost of telemedicine.

As of January 1, 2011 most of the private insurers throughout the state of Virginia are mandated to reimburse for telemedicine services.

Virginia Medicaid reimburses for telemedicine services provided anywhere in the Commonwealth.  Patients with out-of-state Medicaid can still be scheduled, but must have authorization for services from their Medicaid program.  It is best to check with your individuall insurance provider regarding coverage for telemedicine services.

Medicare reimburses for telemedicine services provided to patients from rural areas (designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas.)

All patients being seen through UVA Telemedicine will complete financial screening paperwork just as if they were coming to UVA for their appointment.  After completion of the paperwork, any telemedicine charges will be prorated to match you financial abilities, if applicable.  If you have insurance, a claim will be filed with your insurance company.

How do I participate?

If your physician recommends that you see a specialist, you can have him or her contact a local health clinic that has telemedicine capabilities.  The local clinic will contact the UVA Office of Telemedicine to help arrange an appointment.  Self-referrals are also accepted, but you will need to work with your local telemedicine equipped facility to set up your appointment.
