Specimen Management and Referral Testing Services
DIRECTOR & CLINICAL CONSULTANT: Dede Haverstick, Ph.D.
MANAGER: Dawn T. Burris, MT(ASCP)
LOCATION: Clinical Lab Building, 112 11th St. SW
All specimens submitted for testing or analysis to the Medical Laboratories are received by Specimen Management (Clinical Laboratory Building, 24 hours a day), the Department of Pathology (HEP Building, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm), or Surgical Pathology East (University Hospital, fresh tissue specimens only). Specimens received are given a unique identifying number that will accompany the specimen through all phases of testing or analysis and allow for tracking of the specimen though the laboratories. Processing of specimens, aliquoting as necessary and pre-analytical variables such as proper specimen type and quantity are assessed by this area.
The Referral Laboratory desk of Specimen Management handles all specimens that must be sent to another institution for testing. This includes completing any referral laboratory-specific test request forms, processing of the sample according to the instructions of the testing facility, and packaging for transport. Additionally, this area insures that the referral laboratory is credentialed by CMS and/or CAP as a measure of the quality of testing performed.
