Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is a course created by the American Academy of Pediatrics with the American Heart Association. The AAP describes it this way: "The course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to the resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery."
NRP has two parts: an online module and an in-person skills section.
For the online module, which is an open-book test:
You may not access it more than 30 days before your skills section.
You must complete it within 14 days of starting it.
For UVA's class, you must complete all nine sections, not just 1-4 and 9.
You can fail a section once with no penalty. If you fail twice, you (not your department) will need to buy a new access from us ($25, which all goes to HealthStream -- none is kept by UVa).
For the in-person skills section:
Bring your confirmation that you passed all nine section of the online module.
Expect to do hands-on skills stations, and then team-based megacode simulations with a manikin infant.
Please do not bring your children to class. We love kids, but it is hard to stay focused on class material when a small child is in the classroom.
Please click on a class below to go to the registration form for that class. All participants must register.
Non-UVa staff: When you complete the registration, the Life Support Learning Center will contact you for your payment. On receipt of payment, the LSLC will sign you up for the online module and the in-person skills section that you want to attend, as well as send you a textbook. Total cost for non-UVa employees for the course is $150.00.
UVa staff: Your registration must include the name of the department paying for your course. Once you complete your registration, LSLC will sign you up for the online module and the in-person skills section that you want to attend. You will need to obtain a textbook from your department or online (further details in an email you will receive).
Please do not sign up for the online module on your own, as you risk signing up for a module that is not approved by the AAP. As the AAP says: "The American Academy of Pediatrics has been advised that there are entities offering NRP 'certification' or 'verification' cards through online courses. Please be advised that these entities are not affiliated, associated with, or connected to AAP and they have no authority from AAP or the American Heart Association to make this use of NRP or to issue cards."
Classes are each month, the third Monday from 4 PM - 6 PM, and the third Thursday from 6 PM - 8 PM. In the rare instance that a class does not have 3 participants registered by the latest sign-up date, we may cancel the class. As of January 2015, we are extending the length of our classes, so that Monday classes are 4 PM to 7:30 PM, and Thursday classes are 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
