These courses have been designed to teach the role of the health care provider and the community bystander within the emergency cardiac care system (ECC). The ultimate goal of these courses is that the participant be able to recognize an emergency, and be competent and confident enough to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which includes the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) as appropriate.

2. Health System CPR Training Guidelines

The CPR Training Guidelines have been recently revised and approved by the Patient Care Committee. You can find these requirements by reviewing the 0265 policy on emergency training

As of 1/01/2009

New Hires

  • New Hires are required to provide a copy of their AHA BLS certification to Human Resources when hired
  • New employees will have 60 days from date of hire to complete their BLS training if unable to provide a copy of their AHA BLS Health Care Provider CPR card

Existing Employees

  • Existing Non-Physician direct patient care providers of the UVA Medical Center must be compliant with policy 0265
  • To obtain AHA BLS certification and to register for the online course part 1, click here 
  • To complete the skills session, (part 2) you may use either a local instructor on your unit or contact the Life Support Learning Center by clicking here for a time slot in one of our weekly sessions
  • Remember: skills sessions must be completed within 60 days of the online course completion and you must present the online course completion certificate prior to performing your skills session
