CT Preparation

Patient Resource Coordinator will contact you to discuss preparation instructions for your specific exam including any liquid or food intake restrictions.


Clothing: Wear something lightweight and comfortable.  If your clothing contains an item that may interfere with the images, you may be asked to change into a gown.  A locker will be provided to store your clothing during your exam.

Medication:  You may continue to take any routine medications prescribed by your physician.  If you are diabetic and taking Metformin, you will need to stop using Metformin after your exam.  Please consult with your Physician about follow-up blood tests and instructions on resuming Metformin.

Food Intake:  You may have restrictions on eating prior to your exam (see table below) but please continue to drink plenty of clear liquids.

Liquid Intake:  It is very important that you stay well hydrated prior to having your CT exam.  You may drink clear liquidsClear liquids are water, any sodas, including colas, coffee or tea without dairy added (non-dairy creamer is fine) and apple juice.  Please do not drink citrus, tomato juices or milk.

Special Considerations: To ensure your safety, you will be asked to complete a CT Screening Form at the time of registration or complete the form and bring it with you to your appointment.  If you have a known allergy to a contrast dye agent, please  contact us right away.  Patients with a known contrast allergy can have their exams performed at the UVA Medical Center.
