Ultrasound Preparation

Patient Resource Coordinator will contact you to discuss preparation instructions for your specific exam including any liquid or food intake restrictions.


Clothing: Wear something lightweight and comfortable that will make it easy to access the body part being examined.

Medication: You may continue to take any routine medications prescribed by your physician.

Diet: So that we can obtain the highest quality ultrasound images of the body part being studied, please carefully follow these dietary instructions:

Abdominal Studies

  • Abdomen: (Liver, Liver Doppler, Hernia, Gall Bladder, Spleen, Aorta, Right or Left Upper Quadrant):  Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.
  • Renal Artery Stenosis: Nothing to eat or drink 12 hours prior to the exam.  You should also take 2 Gas-X tablets with 16 ounces of water the night before, and 1 Gas-X tablet with 16 ounces of water the morning of the exam.
  • Renal: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.
  • Renal Transplants: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.
  • Bladder: Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the exam.  You should drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam without urinating.
  • Ascites Survey: No prep required

Pelvic Studies

  • Transabdominal & Transvaginal: You must finish 32 ounces of liquid 1 hour before the exam and not urinate.

Obstetric Studies

  • 1st and 2nd trimester:  You must finish 32 ounces of liquid 1 hour before the exam and not urinate.
  • 3rd trimester-over 30 weeks: No prep required but you should not urinate within one hour before the exam.

Vascular and other studies

  • Upper/Lower Extremities (DVT): No prep required 
  • Popliteal space (Baker's cyst): No prep required
  • Thyroid: No prep required
  • Scrotum: No prep required
