Advanced Practice Nursing

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) at UVA are masters prepared, nationally certified clinicians who manage the care of a defined patient population.  Practicing as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist, the APN is recogninized as an interdisciplinary leader within the service area and institution.  Their role includes expert direct clinical practice, consultation and research.

In addition, the APN II role includes critically analyzing the health care delivery system and clinical outcomes to maximize the delivery of quality, cost effective patient care services.  APN IIIs design, implement, and evaluate creative approaches to patient care, and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge through research and scholarly works.

The Advanced Practice Nurse also helps establish a culture of quality patient care through coaching, guidance and mentorship of others.  Additional information regarding APN I, II & III, and other Nursing Career Ladder Levels can be found on the Professional Nursing Staff Organization web page along with a roster of all of our Advanced Practice Nurses.
