There will be a trip to Beijing in March 2008, an Alaskan cruise in June, Hawaii in September and Paris in November. Beth also asked council if we were hearing anything from our constituents regarding Restructuring. Generally speaking, most members did not have anything to report. Beth informed council that a classified staff survey will be coming early next year. The survey will focus on benefits such as our retirement program.

Provost Office - John Teahan explained that the Provost Office is in transition with Pat Heartsook and Paul Willis departing to other departments within the University.

III. Guest Speaker: Sam Green with the UVA Mindfulness Center

Sam Green shared with council the concept of mindfulness which means to bring your attention fully to what is happening at the moment.  This is a practice that ultimately leads to stress-reduction.  By quieting the mind, you let go of those repetitive thoughts that cause stress, which, in turn, creates energy for other thoughts, activities, etc.  He introduced a mindfulness practice that council members performed during the meeting.  He led us through a simple arm stretch where he brought our awareness to different parts of the body.  We focused on how the stretch felt and we were able to relax our minds.  Dr. John Kabat-Zinn developed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program that is offered through the Mindfulness Center.  The program is designed to benefit a wide range of ailments including those who experience anxiety, sleep disturbances, depression, and fatigue.  To learn more about the program, please visit the website http://www.uvamindfulnesscenter.org/ or call 924-1190.
