III. Guest Speaker: Mike Garin, Senior Programmer/Analyst Office Automation and Micro Support Development Office.

Mike opened his discussion on ergonomic awareness with a description of several of the more common work environment injuries.  Most of these injuries are attributed to repetitive motion.  He mentioned carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, elbow, neck and back pain.  A majority of these injuries can be prevented by getting up from the desk to take short breaks or by doing a different activity at the desk.  Injuries can also be prevented by reviewing your body position in relation to your work space; it is recommended that body alignment is straight with shoulders relaxed.  Furthermore, ergonomic equipment is available to alleviate stress on the body.  By appointment, Karen Allen, Ergonomics Coordinator in the Environmental Health and Safety Department, can visit your workspace to offer suggestions to improve your comfort level.

IV. New Business: The Safety Committee will hold their annual Spring Night Safety Tour on March 19th. They will survey the safety level of different areas on campus experienced at night time. Mark Fletcher welcomes your input, please email him at mef@virginia.edu.

Representative, June Wade, has offered to help council contact guest speakers.  Council members helped prioritize the guest speaker list.  Future guest speakers to council will be listed on the HSAREC website.

V. Old Business: Meeting minutes from February were approved and can be accessed on the HSAREC website.
