Health System Academic & Research Employee Council meeting minutes for August 19th, 2004

The Employee Council meeting went on as scheduled this 19th day of August.

The meeting was called to order by Helen Norfleet-Shiflett, council co-chair.

Helen French, from the M.E.R.C.I. (Medical Equipment Recovery of Clean Inventory) Program and Megan Raymond, Assistant Director for University Outreach were the guest speakers. Helen started the meeting by introducing herself as an Operating Room Nurse here at the Health System. During her career as a nurse she has seen how much surgical equipment is wasted after surgeries. The surgical equipment comes in sealed packages geared for a specific surgery, so once it is opened it can no longer be saved if certain pieces of the equipment are not used.  It was then that she thought of the idea to save the sterile equipment and donate it for use in labs here at the Health System, missionaries and hospitals and clinics in need locally and internationally. MERCI is located near the Medical Center loading dock, on the same side as the Emergency Room. To find out more information about MERCI go to or contact Helen French via pager at 970-4307. Megan Raymond then spoke about the Public Service/Outreach program here at the University and how the University contributes to the community through public service. Services range from Science and Technology to Health and Wellness. To find out more details go to The next meeting will be September 16, 2004 with Dean B.J.
