School Services

The Hospital Education Program (HEP) provides school services for infants, preschoolers, and school-aged students who are hospitalized throughout the University of Virginia Children's Hospital.  Students who are seen for a minimum of three days are enrolled in the HEP and receive credit for school attendance.  Hospital teachers notify home school divisions of enrollment in the HEP.  Assignments are requested for the school-aged child to help maintain a program that is as close as possible to that of the home school.   After discharge a summary of the child's progress is shared with the home school.

For the child who is in special education, a copy of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) is requested from the home school division.  With parent permission the IEP may be modified for use during hospitalization. For the child who is suspected of having a disability, the HEP may implement the eligibility process with parent permission.

All HEP services are free to children and their families.  For additional information, contact (434) 924-2658.
