Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read is a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to make literacy "a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading" (www.reachoutandread.org ). Through Reach Out and Read training, doctors and nurses learn to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to children. Children between the ages of four months and five years are given a developmentally appropriate book at every well-child check-up.
The Hospital Education Program (HEP) is proud to work with doctors and nurses at University of Virginia Children's Hospital as one of the 2,500 program sites participating in this national program. Books are distributed through the Primary Care Center, the Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic, and at the Orange Clinic.
All HEP services are free to children and their families. For additional information, please call (434) 924-2658.
