A CDC study found that the risk of HIV transmission was greater if the injury involves a larger volume of blood and if the source patient is in the final stages of AIDS. It also concluded that HCWs who took zidovudine after an exposure had a significantly lower risk of seroconverting to HIV than those who did not.

Abstract: "CDC Study Finds Double-Gloving Reduces Blood Exposures to Surgeons." AEP. 1995: 2 (2) 4. Presents a summary of an experiment showing the epidemiology of blood contact with surgeons.

"Collaborative Study of Blood Exposure in OR Personnel is Underway." AEP. 1995:2 (2) 7. In an effort to reduce the risk of bloodborne pathogen transmission to OR personnel, the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), in conjunction with the Health Care Worker Safety Center at the Universisty of Virginia, have launched a study on the risk factors for blood and body fluid exposures in the operating room and have created a surveillance database.
