Post Tonsillectomy Diet
Description
The Post-tonsillectomy diet is designed to relieve thirst and
provide oral feedings that may promote return to normal ingestion of
food without irritating the site of surgery. The diet as served
will yield approximately 1,200 to 1,500 kcals.
Indications
The Post-tonsillectomy diet is indicated for the following:
Short-term use after tonsillectomy
To temporarily restrict abrasive foods and irritants
from contacting surgery site
Nutritional Adequacy
The diet is inadequate in most food nutrients, but provides adequate amounts of fluids, energy, Vitamins C, A, and D, and Calcium.
How to Order the Diet
Order as “Post-tonsillectomy Diet.” Variations of this
standard, non-selective diet should be specifically ordered; specify
the exclusion of certain foods or specify a diet limited to certain
foods.
A diet order specifying the number of meals or days of the diet or the
diet progression, as tolerated, will ensure that this nutritionally
inadequate diet is advanced or evaluated.
