If you have Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), or work with patients that do, you will want to obtain a copy of the first detailed patient-focused resource available on the topic, authored by our own Carol Rees Parrish, MS, RD.
A Patient’s Guide to Managing a Short Bowel was developed for patients with short bowel syndrome in an effort to help them understand the workings of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and how to maximize what is left of theirs. This guide was also written to empower patients and their families to take charge of their SBS. Hopefully, the information presented and the understanding that follows will allow for a better working relationship between patient and health care team, and as a result, increase the quality of life not only for those with SBS but also for their steadfast and concerned caregivers.
Living with SBS can be challenging to say the least. Fortunately, there are things that can be done with diet and medications that will help make the GI tract work more effectively and decrease some of the unpleasant side effects of SBS. The guide provides an overview of the normal GI tract and the changes that can occur after bowel resection, as well as specific dietary guidelines in an effort to expand the variety of foods eaten at mealtimes (while helping to maintain both hydration and nutritional status).
