Update 6/7/2013: With the recent announcement that Google Reader will be shutting down as of July, there have been a number of articles and blogs by tech experts about the best, current RSS feeders. A quick internet search will give you lots of information about the most up-to-date RSS readers available!

Thank you to everyone who has been reading the blog posts so far! We have enjoyed posting them and really like having an easy way to share our latest news and information. Thanks also to everyone that has sent us feedback--we love to hear your questions, comments and thoughts!
This post may not apply to everyone, but we have received a few questions and comments regarding RSS feeds so I wanted to take a moment to respond. Like many people, I had seen this little orange RSS icon on websites for years, but had never taken the time to learn more about RSS feeds until we started the blog.
So, if you are not familiar with RSS, here is my one minute version of what I have learned. Basically, RSS is a way that your favorite blogs and news can come to you at one place, rather than you having to go to a variety of websites looking for new posts every day.
The first thing you need to do is to set up an account with an RSS reader. This is the step that kept me from moving forward on this for years, but it was actually very simple to do. There are a number of readers available-- including Google Reader, Newsgator, Bloglines, Newsfire and many others, or you can follow in My Yahoo, iGoogle, My AOL, etc. --we don’t recommend any one over the others.
Once you have an account, you add subscriptions to sites that you would like to follow. Again, this part sounded scary, but was actually very easy to do—the account I use has an “Add subscription” icon. Simply click on that, paste the feed address into the box, and you are set. Your account will now track those sites and let you know if new posts are added. All you need to do is check your reader daily and you can efficiently see if there are updates to any of your favorite pages.
Our blog RSS feed is: http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/pub/dietitian/inpatient/dh/nutrition-support-team-blog. I have added this to my reader and it seems to be working well, but please let us know if you have any trouble.
Now, this RSS thing may not be for everyone. As Joe put it, he likes to “channel surf” and there is something about just going out to your favorite sites on a regular basis. That’s fine too—just check the www.GInutrition.virginia.edu site regularly. We hope to add new blog posts once or twice a week.
