Diabetes/Cardiovascular Clinic
Mission:
To improve the length and quality of life by reducing the risk of
cardiovascular disease, heart failure, diabetes and metabolic syndrome
through novel interdisciplinary clinical care, counseling and
education.
Role of the RD:
The outpatient registered dietitians of the Heart and Vascular Center
provide medical nutrition therapy and education via individual and
group counseling as part of an interdisciplinary staff comprised of
nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, pharmacists, exercise
physiologists and registered dietitians.
Medical Nutrition Therapy Provided:
The patient population served by the Heart and Vascular Center
registered dietitians include those with the following conditions:
hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol),
diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure, peripheral vascular
disease, overweight and obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
Therapy Goals and Patient
Outcomes:
The goal of medical nutrition therapy is to reduce risk factors of the
above conditions in hopes of preventing disease development or
progression. Patients who are able to better control their risk
factors are often able to live a longer and healthier life.
