History and Philosophy

The Outpatient Nutrition Counseling Center at the University of Virginia was started in 2000 and is located in a beautiful setting at our Northridge satellite several miles away from the main hospital. Our outstanding Registered Dietitians (RD) provide state of the art Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and nutrition counseling to pediatric and adult patients with a variety of nutrition related health concerns.

We understand the complexity of making lifestyle change and the emotional, financial and family aspects related to food. We also understand and are trained in the science of food and nutrition and our work is based on a peer reviewed/evidence based approach. Our staff work with clients to meet their health goals of improving weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, digestive health, cardiovascular health and a range of hormonal conditions from pre-diabetes, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) to diabetes. 

We partner with our clients/patients to prioritize the most important “next steps,” guide the acquisition of nutrition knowledge or skills, and provide support and guidance for overcoming personal barriers to success. We are trained in helping people make lasting behavior change and in implementing positive nutrition and lifestyle goals.
