Dietetic Internship - Program Description

The University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and is administered by the Department of Nutrition Services.

The internship program, which has an emphasis in adult and pediatric nutrition support  provides dietetic interns with over 1200 hours of supervised practice experience in clinical, administrative, and community dietetics as well as over 250 hours of didactic training in a variety of advanced topics including:

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy
  • Community Nutrition
  • Disease Pathophysiology and Nutrition Management

Clinical and administrative on-the-job training is provided at the University of Virginia Health System and at other affiliated locations. The internship provides the individual intern with the resources necessary for education and training to qualify the intern for responsibilities as an "entry level" generalist dietitian but with additional specialization in adult and pediatric nutrition support.

The UVA Dietetic Internship Program accepts 10 students per year beginning in early September. The program, which is 43 weeks in length, runs until the end of June.

This program meets the "CADE-Accredited Dietetic Internship" requirement set forth by the American Dietetic Association and its credentialing body, the Commission on Dietetic Registration.  Individuals interested in becoming a Registered Dietitian can visit the ADA's website for more information on the required steps.  Graduates from the UVA Health System Dietetic Internship obtain a "Verification Statement," which enables them to sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians, which is administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
