General Obstetrics & Gynecology

John W. Schmitt, M.D.
Dr. Schmitt directs the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas in San Antonio and completed his OB/GYN residency at Duke University. He comes to UVa with 15 years of experience in private practice at Mid-Carolina Obstetrics and Gynecology in Raleigh, N.C. At Northridge, he continues to enjoy the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology.

Colleen Raymond, M.D.
Dr. Raymond is a graduate of the University of Rochester and received her medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse. Her further education included residency training at University of Pittsburgh Magee Women's Hospital. Dr. Raymond enjoys the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology with special interests in adolescent medicine and menopause.

Dana L. Redick, M.D.
Dr. Redick is a graduate of Oregon Health Sciences University and completed her OB/GYN residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. At Northridge, she enjoys the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology with particular interesst in laparoscopic surgery and adolescent health.

Jennifer Wenger, M.D.
Dr. Wenger is a graduate of Cornell University and received her medical degree and residency training from The University of Virginia. She enjoys the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology with special interests in adolescent medicine. She has also published Who's In Charge Here? -- a collection of children's logic puzzles and is involved in the Charlottesville Free Clinic.

Denise S. Young, M.D.
Dr. Young received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed her residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, VA. She enjoys the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology and sees patients at both the Primary Care Center and University Physicians for Women at Orange.

Robyn Duran RN, MSN, FNP
Robyn Duran received her Masters in Nursing and Nursing Certificate from Yale University. She is a bilingual nurse practitioner. Prior to joining The Women's Place at the University of Virginia she worked at Community Health Centers in California, Connecticut and Maryland. She enjoys working with a diverse patient population and is currently a primary clinician at UVA's clinic for Spanish speaking women, La Clinica. She currently provides primary care for women of all ages, including prenatal care and gynecology.

Yvonne Newberry, RN, MSN, FNP
Ms. Newberry received her AAS degree and RN from Wytheville Community College and her BSN, MSN, and Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate from the University of Virginia. She enjoys the practice of general obstetrics (prenatal and postpartum care) and gynecology at the Primary Care Center. Additionally, she practices in the Ryan White Family Centered Clinic providing OB\GYN care to HIV-infected women and in the Von Willebrand Clinic in the UVA Department of Pediatrics providing obstetrical and gynecologic consultation.

(High Risk/Complicated Obstetrics)

Christian A. Chisholm, M.D.
Dr. Chisholm is Acting Director of the Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Treatment Center. He completed a medical degree and residency at the University of Maryland and received further training in maternal fetal medicine during a fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. His primary interests are high-risk pregnancies, diabetes, lupus and hypertension, with active clinical and research interests in ultrasound during pregnancy.

William N.P. Herbert, M.D.
Dr. Herbert is the Chairman of the Department of OB/GYN and a national leader for women's health. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America and by Good Housekeeping magazine as one of the 401 Best Doctors for Women. An expert in high-risk obstetrics, he typically sees patients as a consultant and is focused primarily in the areas of obstetric and medical complications of pregnancy and assessment of fetal maturity.

Gynecologic Oncology

Laurel W. Rice, M.D.
Dr. Rice received her MD degree from the University of Colorado and pursued her residency and fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. As Division Director of Gynecologic Oncology at UVa, Dr. Rice focuses on the treatment of ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancers. She also has an active research laboratory researching estrogen and cancer.

Peyton T. Taylor Jr., M.D.
Dr. Taylor is a graduate (MD and MS) from the University of Alabama. He completed his residency at UVa in OB/GYN and pursued fellowships at the National Cancer Institute in Surgical Oncology and at UVa in Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Taylor is the Medical Director of the UVa Cancer Center and has active clinical and research interests in gynecologic and complex pelvic surgery.

Willie A. Andersen, M.D.
Dr. Willie Andersen received his MD degree from the University of Maryland and did his residency (OB/GYN) and fellowship (GYN/ONC) at UVa. His clinical interests are in the treatment of gynecologic cancers. Dr Andersen is an active investigator with the national Gynecologic Oncology Cooperative Group.

William P. Irvin Jr., M.D.
Dr. Irvin did his MD training and residency (OB/GYN) at UVa and a fellowship in GYN/ONC at Loyola University. His clinical focus is gynecologic cancer and he is leading a research effort in the development of an ovarian cancer vaccine designed to extend remission.

Midlife Health

JoAnn V. Pinkerton, M.D.
Dr. Pinkerton is the Director of the Midlife Health Center. She received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed her OB/GYN residency at the University of Virginia. Dr. Pinkerton is a nationally recognized authority on issues relating to menopause, osteoporosis and hormone replacement therapy.

Elizabeth B. Mandell, M.D.
Dr. Mandell received her medical degree from Cornell Medical College and completed her residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Specializing in menopause and hormone replacement therapy at tthe Midlife Health Center.

Sue Woodson, CNM, MSN, NP
Sue Woodson is a Certified Nurse Midwife, specializing in gynecological care and midlife health. She has provided patient care at the University of Virginia Medical Center for over 15 years, most recently as a nurse practitioner in the Midlife Center. Sue obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from UVa and a postgraduate certificate in Midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing.

Pat Dougherty, CNM, MSN, NP
Pat Dougherty received a degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia and continued her studies earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Nursing. She completed a postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery in 1995 from the Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing. Ms Dougherty has worked in private practice with physicians, as a sole clinician in Prenatal & Family Planning Clinics in Charlottesville's Thomas Jefferson Health District as well as in Louisa, Fluvanna & Nelson counties.

Uro Gynecology

Kathie L. Hullfish, M.D.
Dr. Hullfish, received her medical degree and completed her OB/GYN residency training at the University of Virginia. After spending time in private practice in Denver, Colorado, she received fellowship training in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. In addition to the practice of general gynecology, she is an expert in the area of female pelvic floor dysfunction which includes such problems as urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. She also specializes in gynecologic surgery, general gynecology, and menopause.

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

Bruce G. Bateman, M.D.
Dr. Bateman is the Division Director Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He received his medical degree from the University of Georgia and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia. Dr. Bateman then pursued more specialized training -completing his residency in Maternal/Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Virginia. He is active in research and Dr. Bateman's particular clinical interests include ectopic pregnancy, laparoscopic tubal surgery, and assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF, GIFT, ZIFT as well as endocrinology.

Joseph G. Whelan III, M.D.
Dr. Whelan is a graduate of Washington & Lee University.  He received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky and completed his OB/GYN residency at the University of South Carolina. After teaching and practicing at Emory University, Dr. Whelan completed a three-year fellowship in Endocrinology and Infertility at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has published and lectured extensively and his clinical interests include in-vitro-fertilization, surgical correction for developmental abnormalities in the female reproductive system, endometriosis surgery, and reconstructive surgery of the uterus and fallopian tubes. In addition, Dr. Whelan's research pursuits involve human egg cell maturation and ovarian folliculogenesis.

Teen Health Center

Nancy McLaren, M.D.
Nancy McLaren is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia and Co-Medical Director of the Teen Health Center there. She received her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Emory. Dr. McLaren has 12 years clinical work in general pediatrics, with a concentration on adolescent health care for the last two years. She has experience in school health programs, community health activities and international health and refugee programs.

Dyan Aretakis, FNP, MSN
Dyan Aretakis is a Family Nurse Practitioner with 18 years of practice in OB/GYN and adolescent health. She obtained her BSN from the University of Connecticut and her MSN and Nurse Practitioner training at the University of Virginia. In 1990 she and her colleagues pioneered the Teen Health Center at the University of Virginia Health System, which now serves as a model of comprehensive adolescent health care in Virginia. She also speaks and writes extensively on the topic of adolescent reproductive health for professional groups, parents and teens.

Heather J. Emory, R.N., WHNP
Ms. Emory received a master's degree and nurse practitioner training from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. At the Teen Health Center, her areas of interest include childhood obesity, insulin resistance, menstrual disorders, and depression.
