Requesting a Website
All departments within the Medical Center, School of Medicine, and Health Sciences Library are provided with the necessary tools, training, and server space in order to participate in developing and managing a departmental website.
Step 1: Initial Setup
The first step is to approach the Web Development Center (WDC) with an idea to build a website. To start this process, please complete the website request form.
In the form we will ask you:
- To identify a Departmental Web Manager (DWM) for your website. This individual will act as the point person, will be responsible for the initial development of the site, and will maintain the site after it is launched.
Please Note: We cannot begin work with your department until a DWM is identified. WDC staff will not serve as a department's DWM.
- Department or initiative name for inclusion in the website's banner.
- A name for the directory (folder) which resides on the WDC servers. This directory holds your web pages and files and will identify your department in the web address (i.e. www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/yourdirectoryname/)
Once the form is submitted to the WDC, please allow 24-48 hours to process your request.
Once the website account is approved and processed, WDC staff will set up an account for you where you will develop the webpages. A staff member will contact you once the website account is available.
Step 2: Web Developer’s Toolkit Training
While the website is being setup in step#1, we encourage you to register to attend the free Web Developer's Toolkit training as it provides the essentials for building and maintaining your website.
This 4 hour workshop is split into 2 focused web development areas. The first half concentrates on the technical "how-to" use of the Toolkit while the second half is devoted to website design best practices and methodologies. You are welcome to attend the full session or just part of it.
Workshops are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 8:30AM to 12:30PM.
Step 3: Final Check-through, Launch, and Marketing
Step 4: Ongoing Support and Communications
The WDC provides ongoing support even after your site is launched. Once the intial project has been completed and your site is published, the staged website will remain accessible to the departmental Web manager for ongoing management.
