Our Mission

Coordination of Health System Web development is provided by the Web Development Center created in July of 2000 as a central resource supporting Web development efforts throughout the UVa Health System. The Web team is comprised of six full-time staff members. The Center works with a variety of departments and committees throughout the University to share technology, exchange ideas, and develop policies and standards to guide the use and development of the Web.

A Web Steering Committee with broad representation across the Health System, provides guidance to the Web Center to help identify, recommend, and approve projects and resources. The Center is organizationally placed within Health System Computing Services as a direct line report to the Health System CIO.

The Health System Web Development Center serves the following broad functions:

  • develop the necessary Web systems infrastructure to support Internet, Intranet, and Extranet capabilities and development

  • identify, evaluate, and develop the necessary Web development tools to support distributed authoring that is both efficient and user-friendly

  • create an effective Web development process supporting departmental Web development from concept to launch

  • create Web development standards and guidelines to ensure consistent design, quality content, and manageability across all efforts

  • identify, evaluate, and integrate Web-based technologies to help us better serve our different audiences both inside and outside the organization

  • facilitate and manage the creation of centralized Web-based resources to be shared between all Web sites, e.g., repositories, directories

  • work closely with other groups within UVa to share ideas and technology, e.g. ITC Web, UVa Web, and leverage common data and technical architectures

  • facilitate communication between groups within the Health System which have similar needs for content, tools, and technology, e.g., portals, calendar

  • facilitate the creation of cross-linkages across all Web development efforts

  • develop and formalize the process of collecting Web site statistics, reporting findings, and integrating findings back into the Web development process

  • develop evaluative processes and IT-focused selection criteria for purchasing outside Web-based content, tools, and services

  • facilitate and coordinate, where applicable, the use of outside Web development consultants or contractors
