Summer Program 2008

We welcome your interest in volunteering at the University of Virginia Medical Center.  There are a limited number of summer volunteer opportunities available.
These will be offered to high-calibre and committed persons who are able to make a sizeable commitment of time consistently over the summer.  A regular commitment for 9 weeks is required -- and additional weeks are welcomed!  Our patients, families and staff need volunteer help in the summer months, when elective surgeries increase; children are on school vacations, and staff and "regular" volunteers go on vacation.

We ask you to start the process early because it may take as long as one month to complete the training and health screening before you may start your 9 weeks of volunteering. Call (434) 924-5251 to schedule your interview with Volunteer Services Staff in advance.

Important Deadlines Summer Volunteers must have:

April 15  Applied and interviewed - bring one letter of reference to the interview and provide a second reference with telephone contact information

April 30  Finished TB screening and immunization check by Employee Health

May 27  Attended Volunteer Orientation

June 10  Be ready to start volunteering

After applying, references and criminal history backgrounds will be checked along with other criteria:

1. Commit to volunteering for two shifts per week for a minimum of nine weeks over the course of the summer (not necessarily consecutively).

2.  Attend Safety & Service Orientation. Time and location will be given to you at your interview with Volunteer Services staff.

3.  Obtain Employee Health Clearance:  Health History and immunization review and a free Tuberculosis Screening are provided by UVa Employee Health. Volunteers must have had chicken pox, measles, and mumps, or their vaccines, as well as vaccines for pertussis and rubella and be able to provide documentation of these. (UVA Student volunteers can often get records from Student Health)  Volunteers will receive a two-step TB screen, over a two-week period.

We hope you are able to meet these deadlines.  If so, review the  list of Summer Program Opportunities.  (434) 924-5251
