Students apply to volunteer at the UVa Medical Center through Madison House.

If you are a UVa undergraduate student interested in volunteering at the Medical Center, read the introductory information below to learn about the four programs we offer.  Then, visit Madison House, 170 Rugby Road, or on line at http://www.madisonhouse.org/ for details.

New Medical Services Volunteers: REGISTRATION: Sunday September 9, 2007, Time TBA at Madison House. New volunteers will sign up for volunteer shifts. Bring driver's license or passport with you when you come to register.
At that time students will also sign up for infection control, health screening and unit training times.

Returning Volunteers to Medical Services, registration is the week of September 3rd at Madison House.

Students may choose from four service areas: Medical Services,  Recreational Therapy, Outreach Services and Daycare. UVa students can learn about the healthcare environment and systems of a major teaching hospital while contributing their talent, time and energy.

Medical Services offers a variety of volunteer roles based on twelve of the hospital's patient care units, as well as in critical  support areas. Unit based examples include: Children's Hospital, Emergency Department, Kidney Center,   and Cancer Center. Support areas include two Pharmacies, Surgical Supply, and MERCI.  A complete list of placements for UVa students is available at Madison House, 170 Rugby Road.

Recreational Therapy places volunteers at Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center, which is part of the UVa Children's Hospital.  KCRC is located about one mile from University Hospital.  Volunteers assist professional staff with Aquatic Therapy and offer Bedside Visiting to patients who are not ambulatory. Placements are also available in Physical and Occupational Therapy, and with a special exercise program for children with disabilities (PACE).  Note:  KCRC is not served by the UVa bus system; volunteers must provide their own transportation.

Outreach Services Program recruits volunteers who are native or very fluent speakers of Spanish for the SISI (Student Interpreter Service Initiative) Program.  Volunteer candidates must pass a language proficiency test, and then receive hospital-specific training.

Daycare Program places volunteers who love children at the Malcolm Cole Childcare Center, which serves children of hospital staff.  Volunteers assist staff to provide play and enrichment activities for children.

UVa Health System Safety and Service Orientation, required annually for all volunteers, is held in September as students arrive in Charlottesville. Students are trained in confidentiality, infection control practices, fire and safety, customer service issues, and receive specific training for their unit as well.  All applicants must present documentation of 2 MMR vaccines, 2 varicella vaccines or date of chicken pox.  A 2 step Tb test will be provided by UVa Employee Health.

Madison House, the UVa student volunteer center, provides an organizational structure and student leadership to assist Volunteer Services staff in coordinating the volunteer program for undergraduates, making it possible for a large number of students to volunteer each academic year. Therefore, volunteer placements for undergrads during the academic year are not available outside the Madison House Program. Students register with Madison House early in September and sign up for an academic-year  commitment (September-April) to a particular program.

Prospective volunteers are invited to visit Madison House in person or on line.  Information is provided about the placement and its duties, as well as available shift times.
