Conditions and Treatment
The vascular care we provide can be divided into six broad categories. Get details on each condition, risk factors, and treatment options available at UVA:
Aortic Disease:
Affects the aorta, the largest artery in the body. The aorta delivers blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
UVA is a national pioneer in the development of minimally invasive endovascular techniques for the treatment of aortic disease.
Arterial Disease:
Affects the arteries, blood vessels that transport blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
UVA is a national pioneer in minimally invasive surgery, including angioplasty, to treat arterial disease and a national leader in the use of stent-grafts to treat aortic conditions.
Compression Disorders:
Caused when blood vessels and nerves are constricted by other parts of the body.
UVA offers the full range of surgical approaches, including reconstruction and repair of compression disorders.
Venous and Related Diseases:
Affect the veins, the blood vessels that transport blood from the arms and legs back to the heart.
Patients at UVA have access to minimally invasive techniques for treating venous disease, including laser and radiofrequency ablation.
Sports-Related Vascular Disorders:
Occur most frequently among high-performance athletes. Often caused by repetitive movement and heavy exercise.
UVA has expertise in very specialized treatment of athletic vascular disorders and treats more high-performance bicyclists than any other hospital in the region.
Aneurysms:
Caused by weakness in a blood vessel wall that creates a significant bulge in a blood vessel. The bulge may harbor blood clots and may rupture, causing major blood loss or death.
UVA has advanced angiography/interventional radiology suites equipped with technology that allows for 3-D images of aneurysms critical in determining treatment. Physicians at UVA are recognized experts in stent-graft repair of aneurysms.
