President's Message

The Central Virginia Chapter of Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association was founded in 2005.  A dedicated leadership group helped this chapter grow from 25 to our current regional membership of 47 nurses.    These leaders have organized quarterly educational meetings, offering continuing education hours for each program, developed an ANCC cardiac-vascular certification review class in 2007, and hosted a regional fall program coordinated by our National office in 2008.

Program planning has grown more difficult not only because we have come upon rather dramatic and challenging economic times, but also due to changes in regulations regarding vendor support. Speakers must now complete a disclosure form prior to their presentation and vendors may not have advertising material set up during educational presentations.  Fortunately, we have found vendors who are both willing to comply with these new guidelines, and have generously supplied educational grants supporting our programs.  We have also increased registration fee to $10.00 for non-members of PCNA to provide additional organization funding.

With these changes in place, and with our strong history behind us, we are ready to look forward to the fulfilling our chapter goals for 2009-2010.  They include:

  1. A Community Initiative Project coordinated by education committee.
  2. Promote Cardiac Vascular Nursing Certification at each quarterly meeting.  (Nurse resource is Karen Coleman)
  3. Increase CVC-PCNA membership by >5 members
  4. Provide alternating business meeting presentation
  5. Quarterly educational sessions in February/May/August and November coordinated by education committee.

Last year we participated in community outreach by joining a group of UVA clinicians in the Remote Area Medicine Program in Wise in Grundy, Virginia.  PCNA nurses provided PVD screening to  157  residents over the three day clinic.  We hope to return again this year to keep PCNA visible to the community and other health care providers.

It is an honor to serve as president and to work with our members who represent the leaders and educators in cardiovascular disease prevention. I invite you to expand your knowledge and network with other cardiovascular specialists by joining us for one of our educational programs.

Yours sincerely,

Cherie Parks, BSN, RN-BC
